In addition to the huge amount of compass tombs, some so-called "Strassengräber (road tombs)" have been found in the north of the Tibesti. This term comes from the German researcher Baldur Gabriel, who described this type of tomb in his 1970 article "Bauelemente präislamischer Gräberypen im Tibesti-Gebirge". Gabriel derives the name from the two street-like stone pavements leading off from the tumulus to the north and south. Because some road graves also have a point to the east, he sees a relationship to the compass tombs located in the immediate vicinity.
